The UEFA Coefficient System was developed by the European football governing body UEFA. This system is used to compute the UEFA Country Ranking and the UEFA Club Ranking.

There are two types of coefficients:

  • Country coefficients - which are used in the UEFA Country Ranking
  • Team coefficients - which are used in the UEFA Team Ranking

UEFA Points

The basis of these rankings are the UEFA points which are awarded to football clubs representing a member country of UEFA as following:

  • In qualifying rounds:
    • 1 point for a win
    • 0,5 points for a draw
  • Starting with the Group Stage of the UEFA Champions League and the First Round of the UEFA Cup:
    • 2 points for a win
    • 1 point for a draw
  • Bonus points:
    • 3 points for entering the Group Stage of the UEFA Champions League
    • 1 point for reaching the quarter final, the semi final and the final of a European competition.

UEFA Country Ranking

The Country Coefficients are calculated by taking an average of the total number of points gained by the teams of a particular country, divided by the total number of teams entered in European club competitions by that country. The UEFA country ranking is computed by the sum of 5 coefficients in the last 5 years. See the country ranking of 2006 for an example of such a ranking list. To determine the participants in the Champions League and the UEFA Cup the ranking for the previous year is used, because each country should know at the start of the season for how many places its clubs are competing.

UEFA Team Ranking

The UEFA team coefficients are calculated as the sum of the number of points of each individual team, and 33% of the coefficient of the team's country. For the calculation of the individual points of the team coefficients, games played in qualifying rounds are not taken into account. The UEFA team ranking is computed as the sum of 5 coefficients in the last 5 years.
