Ligue 1 - MD25 - Postponed game
BORDEAUX (1) - AUXERRE (6) 1-2
Tremoulinas 7'; Jelen 64' 83'
Bordeaux have been in trouble in the last few weeks and this difficult game vs. Auxerre confirmed the doubts some have about the Girondins.
However everything started well for Bordeaux who quickly scored a (lucky?) goal and then controlled the first half with a chance to score the second goal (on the bar). The second half however was totally dominated by Auxerre who had the best chances and thanks to the finishing skills of Jelen got a deserved and prestigious win.
Bordeaux stay on top but more worrying lost Planus on injury. Auxerre jump to the 3rd place!
With 6 teams in 4 points, the end of the season will be very exciting.
BORDEAUX: Tremoulinas - Chalme, Sane, Planus, Tremoulinas - Diarra - Sertic, Gourcuff, Jussie - Chamakh, Cavenaghi
coach: L. Blanc
AUXERRE: Sorin - Hengbart, Coulibaly, Mignot, Grichting - Oliech, Pedretti (c), Ndinga, Contout - Niculae, Jelen
coach: J. Fernandez
Stade Jacques Chaban-Delmas, Bordeaux - att: 20,868
Man of the match
Ireneusz JELEN
Forward, 28, Auxerre & Poland (24 caps)
Career: Cieszyn - Skoczow - Wisla Plock - Auxerre (2006)
Title: Winner of the Cup of Poland 2006 (Wisla Plock)
Jelen is the Mister Plus of the team. Very quick with good finishing skills, he's scoring quite a lot of goals (14 last season, 7 this season but he has often been injured). and gives some value to the long passes of his captain Pedretti and short passes of his teammate Niculae. |

What a very good mactch day for Marseille!!!
Mhsc 1 1 AJA
OL 1 1 St e
ASM 0 0 Bordeaux
There's a good opportunity for OM and Losc to reduce the gap with Bordeaux.
It's really important for OM to win in Toulouse cause next week, we play OL which is in a very good shape.
I guess OM will be tired after the game against Benfica next Wednesday that's why we have to win tonight.
Between 20th of januar and 21th of march(the game against OL) OM plays 16 games. That's huge. |

Ligue 1 - MD28 - Match of the week
MONTPELLIER (2) - AUXERRE (3)
Costa 66'; Oliech 45'
Berthod (Auxerre) sent off 90'
Game between the 2 revelations of the season in France, and at the end a draw that will not satisfy anybody. Auxerre however can blame themselves for having missed so many great opportunities on counter-attacks.
Good game between Montpellier and Auxerre. As expected Montpellier had the territorial domination but Auxerre very well organized were waiting for this to launch quick counter-attacks. Jelen missed in the first half 2 head-to-head vs. an excellent Jourdren, but finally scored at the end of the first half thanks to Oliech (excellent pass from Niculae again). Montpellier equalized in the second half - shot from Costa with his right-foot (whereas he's left-footed) but Auxerre again had a couple of opportunities to win the game, among them an enormous chance in the dying minutes of the game missed again by Jelen, the hero of the game at Bordeaux.
MONTPELLIER: Jourdren - Yangambiwa, Spahic, El-Kaoutari, Jeunechamp - Marveaux, Pitau (c), Costa - Camara, Montano, Ait-Fana
coach: R. Girard
AUXERRE: Sorin - Hengbart, Coulibaly, Mignot, Berthod - Oliech, Pedretti (c), Ndinga, Birsa - Niculae, Jelen
coach: J. Fernandez
Stade de la Mosson, Montpellier - att: 19,320
Man of the match:
Geoffrey JOURDREN
Goal keeper, 24, Montpellier, France
Career: Montpellier (academy)
Geoffrey Jourdren is doing an excellent season in the goal of Montpellier. He was very unfortunate to have at the beginning of last season a bad and long injury what enabled Johann Carrasso (the brother of Cedric, the goal keeper of Bordeaux) to become a starter and do an excellent season as well. Carrasso unfortunately became injured at the beginning of this season and Jourdren took his place back. With these 2 excellent keepers (Jourdren was selected in all youth selections), Montpellier have some reserves! |

| Jelen scores again and Auxerre becomes the new leader of the League 1!(at least until Sunday matches). He missed 2 great chances against Montpellier one week ago but now He proved his good finishing once again. A few days ago I read an interview with Auxerre coach, He said that Jelen will probably leave the team after this season and join some stronger club because his skills let him to play in top European clubs. We will see what happen during summer transfer window. |

Ligue 1 - MD29 - Match of the week
BORDEAUX (1) - LILLE (4) 3-1
Ciani 39' Jussie pen. 66' Gourcuff 75'; Hazard 24'
Ricardo Costa (Lille) sent off 65'
Very important win for Bordeaux who consolidate their leadership in the Ligue 1, push one of their most ambitious challengers Lille back to 5 points and found back a good quality of football. Bad week for Lille who lost at Liverpool on Thursday, then at Bordeaux today.
It's Lille however who had the better start, Hazard benefiting of a mistake of Ciani. This is the same Ciani who took care to equalize with a superb volley after on a set-piece. Lead by a good Gourcuff, Bordeaux dominated the second half and got a penalty for a foul of Ricardo Costa (sent-off) on Chamakh; Gourcuff added a nice 3rd goal at the end of the game.
BORDEAUX: Carrasso - Chalmé, Sané, Ciani, Tremoulinas - Fernando, Diarra (c) - Gouffran, Gourcuff, Jussiê - Chamakh
coach: L. Blanc
LILLE: Landreau - Béria, Rami, Chedjou, Ricardo Costa - Balmont, Cabaye, Dumont (c) - Obraniak, Touré, Hazard
coach: R. Garcia
Stade Jacques Chaban-Delmas, Bordeaux - att: 32,552
Man of the match
Yoann GOURCUFF
Midfield,23, Bordeaux & France (17 caps)
Career: Rennes - Milan - Bordeaux (2008)
Titles:
- Winner of the Clubs WC 2007 (Milan)
- Winner of the Champions League 2007 (Milan)
- Champion of France 2009 (Bordeaux)
- Winner of the Coupe de la Ligue 2009 (Bordeaux)
Gourcuff is coming back. After a rather difficult season - compared to what can be expected from this player -, Gourcuff is showing signs that he's going batter and better. Best man of the match vs. Olympiakos, then best man of the match vs. Lille, he is the main weapon of Bordeaux for the end of the season. |

Can Auxerre win the league, i have always been fascinated by this club, mainly because of Guy Roux but also because of the fact that they have a 23000 capacity ground and a 45000 population.
I have often compared Auxerre to Burnley but in reality Burnley is almost twice the size.
Anyway what are their chances ? and also what about Montpelier ? are they genuine challangers too ? _________________ Form is Temporary, Class is Permanent |

Well, question of quality, nothing really to argue about a possible title for Auxerre or Montpellier, although in my opinion Montpellier is much more interesting than Auxerre. Auxerre is first of all a very organized team with a good defence, 2 passers with Pedretti and Niculae and a scorer Jelen. Montpellier is not as defensive and are more ambitious in their way of playing with their creative players (Costa, Ait-Fana).
Afterwards, it also (and mainly) depends on Bordeaux and Marseille. If Bordeaux and Marseille play as champions meaning don't waste points, I think that it will be difficult for Auxerre and Montpellier to challenge them, all the more than Bordeaux and Marseille both have 1 game in hand.
That said, Bordeaux are still in Europe and we know how the Champions League can cost points in domestic leagues but the elimination of Marseille this week in Europa League certainly is a bad news for Montpellier and Auxerre.
It will be difficult, but who knows? |

Although you are modest I guess you really should put Lyon in this category too. I mean if they play consistently to the level you would expect they should be in a three way fight for the title - all be it probably the outsider as things stand - & certainly big favorites for the final CL spot. And I guess Lille would still be perceived as the most dangerous of the three challengers?...
Out of interest - if Auxerre & especially Montpellier are exceeding expectations this season who would you say is underperforming? Put another way - if someone had to name a top six at the start of the year based on the expectations & potential of a team - who would be there?
I guess PSG - who always seem to underachieve lately? I might actually want to put them in a top 4 with Bordeaux, Marseille & Lyon.
But for the next tier - based on historic & recent European stuff (& very little actual knowledge of the current teams players or the financial power of the clubs) - I would probably lump Auxerre, Lille, Monaco, Saint-Etienne & possibly Lens pretty close together.
NB I noticed a couple of repeats in the table & results above. Lens twice in the table - 2nd one is Nice I think. And in the results two Nancy's - 2nd one is Sochaux. |

thanks for noticing it.

well, Lyon already are 5 points far from Bordeaux knowing that Bordeaux have 1 game in hand to play at Le Mans (so virtually a gap of 8 points). With 9 games left, let's be realistic, it's becoming very tricky for Lyon. If there was only one team in front, you can still expect it to fail in the last games but with 6 teams involved, you can't expect all of them to fail.
That's the first point.
Second point, the Champions League costs points. It's not only a question of depth of the squad (although this is discussable), but players are so focused on that competition that they always have problems for the games played before the CL matches (fear to be injured, lack of motivation, etc.). And don't expect an elimination vs. Bordeaux in the CL to become an advantage in the L1. I think that the loser of that game will be deeply hurt for the end of the season.
So, Lyon will certainly not win their last 9 games, assuming that they were able to.
Third, let's be honnest, although their football is much better than it used to be in winter time, it's not a great Lyon. Well, they've done a great game vs. Real Madrid (1st leg), but this is the only great game we've seen in 2010. There was like a little miracle for the 2nd leg vs. Real Madrid and they were rather disappointing yesterday at Marseille, although they were rather unfortunate to get 2 bars.
The only chance for Lyon is they still have to play vs. most of their direct competitors: vs. Lille (but after the CL game), at Bordeaux, vs. Auxerre and at Montpellier. This is the only way to come back assuming that Lyon are able to win those games. Lyon have not been performing so far vs. the other big French teams (defeats at home vs. Bordeaux and Montpellier, defeat at Lille, 1 point in 2 games vs. Marseille - just an away win at Auxerre).
So, Lyon are late, don't have an easy schedule with the Champions League and above all, I am not sure that they are among the 3 best teams of the country (by alphabetical order, Bordeaux-Lille-Marseille?).
I am really worried that Lyon don't get the CL spot for the next season and it's sincere.
| badgerboy wrote: |

|
oh yes. Not only they are playing well (to me the most interesting football in France), but they have 2 positive factors: the come-back of Gervinho who was injured in the last 2 months and the elimination in the Europa League so that they can 100% concentrate on the L1.

yes, PSG for sure. Strange team who's playing rather well but don't convert their chances and is always taken at the end of the games. Another example this week-end at Nice.
Among underachievers, I would also rate St Etienne; 6th budget in France if I'm wrong and fighting for relegation for the second season in a row.

You mean for the group of outsiders?
As far as Lille are concerned, I would rate them more and more as a big club (in the same category as Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille & Paris - yes, I presume that Paris should be considered as a big club). Lille should get soon their stadium (at last!), a brand new 50,000 stadium and it should help them grow.
Otherwise, Monaco and Rennes should in my opinion be considered as the most valuable outsiders. They both have talented young teams and the potential to grow (or come back to the top for Monaco).
St Etienne have the money but for some reasons (poor management?) are not able to reach another step.
Auxerre are fine, and like apw, I really admire their consistency at the highest level, but I guess that they already are close to their maximum. If as Legionista was mentioning they are not able to keep Jelen at the end of the season, it will be difficult.
Lens really suffered, financially speaking from their relegation. Once they get rid off of their big salaries (Kovacevic, Maoulida), they will be able to rebuild a team but it will take time. |

Coupe de France - Quarters
Quevilly, amateur club located in the suburbs of Rouen, currently playing in CFA (4th level), reach the semi-finals for the second time of their history! (first time was in 1968).
Auxerre eliminated vs. Paris SG on penalty shoot-out. The Cup could save a very dark season so far for the Parisians.
This also means that the 6th of the Ligue 1 will not be European next season.
AUXERRE - PARIS SG 0-0 (pen. 5-6)
MONACO - SOCHAUX 4-3 aet
Puygrenier 34' Haruna 38' Pino 90+4' Maazou 95'; Boudebouz 29' Dalmat 48' Brown 71'
LENS - SAINT-ETIENNE 3-1
Eduardo 36' Yahia 75' Roudet 89'; Mirallas 1'
QUEVILLY (4) - BOULOGNE 3-1
Coquio 11' Laup 28' Ouahbi 67'; Marcq 45'
